Assistant Director General, Antimicrobial Resistance, World Health Organization

Hanan H. Balkhy, joined the WHO as Assistant Director General for Antimicrobial Resistance in 2019. Prior to that she was the Executive Director for Infection Prevention and Control at the Ministry of National Guard, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Founder and Chief of the Infectious Disease Unit at King Abdullah International Medical Research Center in Riyadh. Balkhy has led the WHO CC for IPC and AMR at the National Guard from 2009 till 2019 as well as the GCC center for IPC. Dr Balkhy has served as an expert on many WHO committees including: the Review Committee on the Role of the International Health Regulations (2005) in the Ebola Outbreak and Response, the Advisory Group on Integrated Surveillance and Antimicrobial Resistance (AGISAR), the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (STAG-AMR), and the International Health Regulations Review Committee (IHR-RC).
